The MIRS Course

The Midlands Interventional Radiology Skills Course (MIRS) is an industry sponsored practical skills course for doctors training (or interested) in Interventional Radiology.

It runs every year in February/March and includes numerous practical stations such as angioplasty/stenting simulators, embolisation flow models, radial access kits, mini-EVAR simulator and aspiration thrombectomy.

The RESIST Course

Rugby Endovascular Simulator & Interventional Skill Training (RESIST) is a 1-day, small group (max 4 delegates), intensive course which runs every Thursday throughout the year for radiology trainees & radiographers to gain a better understanding of Interventional Radiology, the procedures that we do and the equipment that we use.

It includes an interactive lecture, ultrasound guided vascular access training and the whole afternoon spent on a state-of-the-art AngioMentor endovascular simulator performing procedures such as angioplasty, stenting and embolisation.

The ANSIR Course

The Advanced Nursing Skills in Interventional Radiology Course (ANSIR) is a 2-day, small group (max 8 delegates), intensive course which runs every month for nurses in Interventional Radiology, or those wanting to move into the specialty.

It includes 4 modules covering key areas of practice:

DAY ONE: Module A:   “Patient Preparation”  

Pre-procedure assessment

Ward assessment

Blood result analysis

Taking delegated consent

Patient check-in & monitoring

DAY ONE: Module B:   “Procedure Preparation”      

Preparation of the IR theatre for the safety of the patient

PPE & radiation protection

Scrubbing, aseptic technique and handling of sharps

Undertaking WHO “Time Out” pre & post procedure

Management of an IR procedure trolley

DAY TWO: Module C: “Patient Care”              

Recognising a deteriorating patient (NEWS & escalation)

Analgesia & safe sedation

Post-procedure recovery & aftercare

Handover or discharge of patient

DAY TWO: Module D: “Procedural Skills”
